A brief history

On September 1st of 1970, department of “Medicines’ technology and organization of pharmaceutical activity” was first listed as a separate unit of the School of Pharmacy according to the Rector’s of State Institute of Medicine from Chisinau order. This was based on the official decision of The Scientific Counsel and the order of the Ministry of Health of Moldova. After the foundation, the following disciplines had been taught in the department: Organization and Economics of the Pharmaceutical Activity, Medicines’ technology in pharmacy, Industrial medicines’ technology, Medical merchandology. At the same time, Vasile Procopisin, senior-lecturer, PhD was appointed Head of the Department.

In 1972 the Department was renamed as “Department of Pharmacy” and two new disciplines: Pharmacognosy and Botanics were added to its original course load.

In 1984 the “Department of Pharmacy” has been divided into two separate entities, one of which is named “Department of Pharmacy organization and economics”. The unit is then moved into the building of the newly opened university pharmacy located at 22 Nicolae Testemitanu str. in Chisinau. This point in time can be considered the official year the department was founded. In December of 1999 the name of the department became “Social Pharmacy”.

Vasile Procopisin, PhD was Head of the Department until 2007. He was corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova, Professor in Pharmacy and Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy. He was the founding father of the department and a remarkable personality in the world of pharmacy both on a national and international scale. Some of his accomplishments include: author of basic manuals for pharmacy students in the former USSR, member of the editorial board of the magazine “Farmatsia”, initiator of professional collaborations with pharmacy schools from Ukraine, Romania, Russia, Poland, Lithuania, Belorussia and many others. A major step in the development of the department was the prove of the scientific importance and further foundation of the first university pharmacy – first of its kind within the former USSR and one of the first pharmacies used for both teaching and medicines compounding in Europe. In 2009 the department is proudly named after its founder: Department of Social Pharmacy “Vasile Procopisin”.

Being a specialized department, in different periods of time the disciplines taught within the department are: Pharmacy organization and economics, Medical merchandology, Bases of Pharmaceutical Activity, Pharmaceutical Management, and Basics of Information Technologies in Pharmacy. Based on the recent changes and improvements in the curriculum, the department now holds the following disciplines: History of Pharmacy and pharmaceutical propedeutics, Pharmaceutical management and legislation, Pharmaceutical Marketing, Legislation related to the pharmaceutical activity, Social Pharmacy, Informational systems and pharmaceutical care, Entrepreneurship in pharmaceutical activity.
